We are so excited for it all to begin!

So Long Sweet Summerfuel

The past two days have been some of the best here at ASA Summerfuel Harvard. On Thursday night, students headed out to Boston for their last RA Night. RA CK’s group had a wonderful dinner and bowled, while RA Mike and RA Justin headed to the Prudential Center for some last minute shopping. RA Chelsea and her girls had a Thai dinner, shopped on Newbury Street, and ended the night with Boston’s Famous Georgetown cupcakes. RA Marissa’s group enjoyed delicious sushi and shopped at Quincy Market. All of the students had a wonderful evening with their RAs and were able to get one last taste of Boston.

Last night, students attended their last classes and ended the night with the Closing Banquet. The night started out with an introduction and a wonderful dinner. After everyone was well fed, our program director and a special Beatboxer, David Berl, surprised everyone with an amazing rap about ASA Summerfuel Harvard. Everyone was thoroughly impressed. Afterwards, the RAs handed out awards to their students. These awards ranged from “Most Likely to Get into Harvard” to “King of the Strings” to “The Straight-Shooter Award” to “Most Likely to be Summerfuel’s Sweetheart.” All the awards were unique and funny and every students went home with some kind of Summerfuel-inspired title.

After dancing the night away, students spent the night together. Some stayed in our courtyard until the wee hours of the morning, while others went to get a good night’s sleep. With students already on their way back home, it’s hard for us to say goodbye to such a wonderful summer. We’ve all had such amazing memories here at Harvard and I know that many of us will remember ASA Summerfuel Harvard as one of the best summer of our lives.

In the beginning of the program, our program director explained to the students that there were three simple rules: learn lots, have fun, and stay safe. These rules have become a running theme throughout our time here at Harvard and can apply to more situations than one. We hope that if there’s anything our students take home, it’s these three rules because even after our program ends, they still apply.

Thanks you ASA Summefuel Harvard for a fantastic summer. We will miss you all!

Photo Scavenger Hunt

Last night the students participated in one of their last evening activities; Summerfuel Photo Scavenger Hunt.  During this activity students were divided into teams of two and three and were challenged to go out and take pictures of different landmarks around the Harvard campus and the city of Cambridge.  Landmarks included the John Harvard statue,  the door to the Harvard Lampoon, and the Harvard Cooperative society otherwise known as The Coop.  Students were also awarded extra points for bringing back items like take out menus and subway cards, otherwise known as a Charlie Card.  To give the students an extra challenge they had to find a Harvard University student and take a picture of their student id.

Tonight the Students are headed into Boston for their last Boston excursion.  It’s hard to believe how fast this month has gone by, but it has been an amazing summer.

Casino Night- It’s All About the Benjamins!

Last night, ASA Summerfuel Harvard held a Casino Night! Though no real money was involved, each student received a set amount of chips which they could bet in four games- Blackjack, Roulette, Craps, and Texas Hold Em’. While some lost it all, others doubled, tripled, and even quadrupled their money!  With their winnings, students could purchase a raffle ticket for $200 each. They could then use each ticket to try and win a raffle for three separate prizes- an Urban Outfitters gift card, a Starbucks gift card, and a gift card to the COOP (Harvard’s school store)! By the end of the night, we had three big winners. Though only a few could win, students had a great time playing these fun gambling games.

With our departure day rapidly approaching, students do not seem to want to leave! However, we have a fantastic last week planned. Tonight, students will participate in a Harvard-inspired scavenger hunt and then will enjoy a wonderful cookout dinner. On Thursday, students will head out on their last RA night to Boston and on Friday, we will have a final dinner, awards, and dance! We’ve had an amazing summer so far and expect the next few days to be as spectacular as ever.

The Last Week!

To start off the last week, each group had their final RA night which included a variety of different activities. (Pictured above) Both RA Justin and Mike took their boys to the bowling alley where the students got to experience traditional 10 pin bowling as well as candle stick style. While playing, they got to enjoy delicious pizza and great tunes! RA Trish took her girls to the infamous Dick’s Last Resort restaurant in Boston, then later enjoyed a movie night back at the residence hall. RA’s C.K. and Chelsea took their residents to the great Cambridge Common for dinner then had a excellent time playing games such as “Fish Bowl” and “Taboo” later throughout the night.

At ASA Summerfuel Harvard, we are also taking learning and education to next level, outside of the classroom. Teachers are taking their students on extraordinary field trips to apply all of the knowledge they have been gathering in their hard work for the past three and a half weeks.

The Food Matters workshop took a field trip to Life Alive, an “Urban Oasis and Organic Cafe.” While eating delicious, healthy and colorful meals and drinking healthy smoothies, they discussed the locavore movement, what healthy eating means in the general world and ways to potentially make modern food healthier altogether. After watching episodes of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, discussing news articles on modern food culture and food politics, their trip to Life Alive gave them the opportunity to witness an environment of an ideal and exemplary food system they had been talking about.

Whew!- What A Weekend!

We had quite a full weekend here at ASA Summerfuel Harvard. On Friday night, students and staff celebrated Ramadan together at Ramapalooza. For those who are unaware, Ramadan is a Muslim holiday in which observers must eat only before the sun rises and after the sun sets. Ramadan is meant to show how those less fortunate feel every day and allows us to appreciate something we usually take for granted.

For Ramapalooza, each hall ordered a specific type of food. Student were able to sample cuisine from all around the world from sushi to Turkish food to American style soup and more! Students observing Ramadan broke their fast at 9 PM with the entire program. By the end of the night, everyone was far from hungry!

What a feast! Ramapalooza 2012!

Mmmmm! Sushi and Pasta 🙂

On Saturday afternoon, a group of students headed out on a boat from Boston Harbor to go whale watching! Luckily, we were able to see THREE types of whales- Minke, Fin, and Humpback! The whales took some excellent dives into the ocean, showing off their huge flukes! (Did you know a Humpback whale can be as long as TWO school buses and that their flukes are usually 12 feet long?)

Ready for whale watching!

Look at that Humpback whale fluke!

After a long day of whale watching, students met up with the rest of the program who had been shopping at Quincy Market all day. Students did a little shopping, grabbed a delicious dinner, and then the entire program headed to the movies to see The Dark Knight Rises. Most of the students agreed that the movie was incredible and was a perfect way to end the day.

On Sunday, students headed to Water Country in Portsmouth, NH. The weather was perfect for a day at the water park, and students could choose from a number of rides. A few students were brave enough to go down Geronimo, a super tall slide that shoots you down to the bottom in a matter of seconds! After a long day in the sun and an even longer weekend, students were exhausted. The rest of the night was spent grabbing dinner and hanging out in Hastings courtyard.

On the bus to Water Country!

Tonight is the last RA night of our program and the RAs have some great plans. Check back tomorrow to see how we spent our night!

Public Speaking and Cannons Lacrosse Game!

Yesterday was yet another awesome day at ASA Summerfuel Harvard. After morning classes, the Public Speaking class presented their final speeches to a large group of students. The topics ranged from a story about a student’s cat to why Barbie dolls are bad role models. All students did a fantastic job speaking in front of such a large group.

After dinner, two RAs and a group of students went to the Boston Cannons Lacrosse game. Everyone had a great time cheering on Boston and even got to see a show from the Boston Cannons Dance Team!

Tonight is the first night of Ramadan, and ASA Summerfuel is embracing the Muslim culture by putting on a Ramapalooza dinner tonight! Students observing and not observing Ramadan will break their fast with games, fun, and, of course, a big meal! Check back tomorrow to see how students enjoyed their night!

Let’s Go Red Sox, Let’s Go!

Yesterday was a rainy day at ASA Summerfuel Harvard. But, that did not stop students from going to the Boston Red Sox game! After their PM classes, students hopped on the T to Fenway Park! Luckily, the rain had stopped by the time students reached Fenway and were able to sit in the grand stand section!

Fenway Park!

Soda, and baseball, and hot dogs- oh my!

Students enjoyed a delicious array of baseball foods including hot dogs, popcorn, and more! We were even able to see a DOUBLE home run! Needless to say, the Red Sox won 10-1 against the Chicago White Sox. Students were happy to see the Red Sox win and made it home just in time for check-in!
